About This Book
A first-person narrator and three friends, guided by a retired seaman, set out from a coastal town in a newly purchased catboat for a summer cruise that quickly gathers unexpected companions. Their voyage brings comic and adventurous encounters with two kinds of pirates, a castaway on a desert island, a buried hoard, midnight burglaries, and offers of shelter that lead to further pursuit. Complications involving a Gold Company and a mysterious Mr. Snider embroil the crew and their foes, and after a series of scrapes the voyage is interrupted and then set in motion again, blending youthful camaraderie with nautical detail and light humor.
