About This Book
A young suitor hopes to marry a woman whose stern, military-minded father opposes the match and challenges the suitor's courage. A wager about bravery sends the suitor to spend a midnight vigil at a cottage reputed to be haunted while the father plans to check on him. The narrative follows the domestic plotting, the night journey, and a comic collision of pride, superstition, and performative masculinity that tests appearances of courage.
