The Valkyries

The narrative adapts a music-drama into prose, following the entanglement of gods, humans, and mythical warrior-maidens as power, law, and passion collide. It opens with a fated meeting between a stranded warrior and a woman whose sympathy turns to passionate kinship, leading to recognition, armed confrontation, and a challenge to divine authority. A chief god contests the couple's claim while a quarrel with his consort produces punitive judgment against a defiant shield-maiden, whose flight, capture, and enforced sleep close the action. Themes of destiny, sacrificial love, and the limits of divine rule run through a sequence of intense episodic scenes.
