About This Book
A merchant starship detects catastrophic volcanic and seismic activity threatening a densely populated jungle world and the captain must weigh duty against schedule to attempt a rescue. After landing, the crew encounters a tall, vigorous indigenous people who perform ritualized, mask-wearing displays and prove reluctant to accept outside aid. The story follows the crew's tense debates and first-contact efforts as practical plans collide with the natives' youthful pride and ritual behavior, exploring themes of adolescence, cultural misunderstanding, moral responsibility, and the limits of intervention.
