About This Book
The narrator describes a comic episode in which a handsome seaman marries a possessive widow who closely supervises his movements; a mischievous night-watchman forges a love-letter signed Dorothy to expose her jealousy. The fake letter sends the wife searching along the river embankment and produces an embarrassing encounter, while the seaman becomes oddly convinced that an admirer exists, keeps the letter, and insists on meeting the supposed woman to declare his marriage and do his duty, leaving friends and bystanders to observe the resulting confusion.
