The Tree of Life

A stranded interstellar adventurer explores ancient Martian temple ruins and encounters an eerie luminous woman whose milky, moonstone eyes communicate telepathically and beg to be led to the shrine crowned by an ornate tree-of-life grille. He escorts her to the well and uncovers a subterranean ritual site where a priestess and a living arboreal horror entrap victims in writhing branches to feed or propagate. The narrative follows his tense investigation and desperate effort to understand and survive the alien psychology and sacrificial machinery, blending cosmic dread with the decay of a lost civilization and the destructive lure of a sentient symbol.
