About This Book
A band of natives stages a night raid on an outsider stockade guarded by mechanized weapons; their stealthy approach yields partial success but one raider is wounded and left behind as the defenders’ technology proves deadly. A small autonomous plaything belonging to the God-men’s children discovers the injured native, treats and carries him away, and later interferes with other machines. The tale juxtaposes improvised resistance and advanced armament while exploring ambiguous machine agency, the persistence of older spiritual loyalties, and how compassion and violence can emerge from unexpected sources.
