The Tale of Jemima Puddle-Duck

A domestic duck, prevented from hatching her own eggs by the farmer's household, leaves the farm to find a secluded nesting place. In the woods she is befriended by a sly, well-mannered fox who offers a feathered shed and flatters her while requesting farm herbs for an omelette. Trusting him she brings the provisions; the farm collie grows suspicious, alerts others, and frees her from the shed as the fox disappears and her eggs are destroyed by the rescuing animals' puppies. She later lays more eggs and manages to rear a small brood despite being an unreliable sitter.
