About This Book
The book presents a concise life-and-career portrait of the general who led American forces overseas during the Great War, beginning with his rural upbringing and schooling and following his training at a military academy. It recounts frontier service and early combat experience, instruction assignments, participation in the Spanish-American conflict and subsequent Philippine campaigns, later operations on the Mexican border, and eventual selection to command the expeditionary army in Europe. Interwoven are descriptions of interactions with allied leaders, ceremonial visits abroad, assessments of his leadership and character, anecdotes illustrating habits and temperament, and a summary of his military record.
