About This Book
This study traces Coventry's development from early origins through medieval and early-modern periods, surveying religious foundations, monastic and civic institutions, guilds, municipal government, and the division between Prior's and Earl's halves. It examines urban architecture and topography, notable buildings and the cathedral ruins, the Corpus Christi pageants and dramatic tradition, civic offices and records, economic life of merchants, crafts, markets, and Lammas lands, plus responses during York–Lancaster conflicts and Tudor–Stuart politics. The account concludes with descriptions of daily life, surviving antiquities, and guidance for identifying historic sites around the city.
