About This Book
A wooden toy donkey comes to life after receiving a varnished coat in a North Pole workshop, where toys move when unobserved; with a nodding head he joins nocturnal make-believe adventures among dolls and other toys, sails on a make-believe voyage, visits a jolly store, encounters a delicate china cat, and becomes attached to a lame boy. The story follows setbacks—a flood, a broken leg, and loneliness—and the donkey's journey to a new home and usefulness, concluding with a recovery that allows renewed play.
