About This Book
The play centers on a dispute between an elder noble who tightly controls his fortune and his younger brother whose hopes depend on inheritance, setting off bitter rivalry and social maneuvering. Interwoven with this are a covetous lawyer and his wife, romantic pursuits among younger gentlemen and women, and a meddling curate whose legal and moral entanglements intensify complications. Through scenes of wit and confrontation the action explores themes of greed, legitimacy, patronage, and familial duty, using satire of social pretensions and legal chicanery to drive comic misunderstandings and eventual reckonings among characters.
