Two inept spacemen from a galaxy patrol embark on a solemn-seeming mission to learn why no extraterrestrial force is attacking Earth, only to encounter a life-bearing, tumbling celestial body described in absurd terms. They discover an indolent civilization amid surreal landscapes of molten gold, cardboard houses, and peppermint poles, and respond with ludicrous theatrical gestures—costumes, planted beans, and mock diplomacy—while expecting combat.
