About This Book
Set around Palermo and its countryside, the narrative follows Pascal Bruno, a fierce outlaw whose return to a wedding leads him to assassinate the groom and force the bride into a grotesque tarantella over the corpse. The account follows his refuge in a robber’s stronghold, shifting alliances with nobles and peasants, episodes of gratitude and vengeance, and acts of treachery that provoke a prolonged siege. The climax unfolds with a chapel vigil and the bandit’s death. Descriptive passages of landscape and local customs frame a brisk tale of honor, violence, and retribution.
