About This Book
A young Scotsman narrates how a trivial household mishap forces him into exile and a life at sea as a purser aboard a ragged brigantine. He encounters rough sailors and a duplicitous captain, becomes unwittingly complicit in a prince's murder, endures foreign imprisonment, and marches and fights with an alien regiment in France before returning changed. Along the way he confronts love, guilt, and recurring chances that shape his fortunes, learning hard lessons about courage, moral consequence, and the caprice of fate amid vivid scenes of maritime danger and continental warfare.
