About This Book
The drama stages the rise and court life of a Scottish king and follows political maneuvering and martial preparations that culminate in his defeat and death at the border battle of Flodden. Scenes alternate between solemn choruses and battlefield councils, and lighter interludes featuring a fairy masque and rustic comic figures. Themes include ambition, the costs of rulership, loyalty and the interplay of public spectacle and private folly. The structure mixes historical narrative, dramatic set pieces and theatrical entertainments to contrast high tragedy with popular comedy.
