About This Book
A construction crew pushes a rail line across desert country, following engineers and camp bosses as they organize men, equipment, wagons, and cooks; daily toil, mechanical challenges, and personality clashes shape camp life. Tension rises with competing interests and hidden gunmen as scouting, sabotage, and skirmishes interrupt work, and an instrument man is shot and solemnly buried near the track. Episodes alternate technical detail about bridge and trestle building with confrontations among bosses, laborers, and outsiders, building toward an armed showdown at the contested settlement of Red Hills.
