The narrative charts life at a grand Polish estate in the eve of war, where a widowed countess and her son manage lands, traditions, and patriotic responsibilities while domestic gossip, suitor rivalries, and arranged-match thinking complicate relationships. Cousins and guests arrive amid hunts, garden talk and memories of past glories; younger characters negotiate love, obligation and leisure, and the household supports cultural survival through schooling and agricultural improvement. Interleaved scenes follow peripheral figures—a chaplain seeking convalescence and traveling relatives—so that personal choices and social ritual are set against the threat of wider political upheaval.
