The People That Time Forgot

A wartime torpedo sinks a passenger liner and survivors, after betrayal and peril at sea, are carried to a hidden southern land where prehistoric beasts and a mosaic of primitive human groups persist. A recovered manuscript frames an account of rescue by a bright-faced semi-human woman and of a hazardous northward journey through territories inhabited by apelike, club-armed, and hatchet-armed peoples. Constant danger from giant reptiles and carnivores, intermittent alliances and attacks, and the struggle to find food and shelter drive the action. Adventure and natural-history speculation combine as the party confronts the island's strange biological order while seeking safety and explanation.
