About This Book
A compendium of Leonardo's handwritten papers, spanning roughly thirty years, gathers scattered observations on painting, anatomy, mechanics, optics, and natural philosophy. Entries are fragmentary, often written right-to-left in idiosyncratic orthography, and mix disparate topics on single pages; the editor reorganizes and numbers passages by subject to permit coherent reading and to indicate original manuscript locations. The texts reveal an analytical experimental method, precise studies of perspective and physiology, and many practical precepts for artists and engineers, alongside unfinished plans and cross-references. Notes on editorial decisions and a bibliography enable reconstruction of original sequences and contextual dating where possible.
