A compilation of brief genealogical notices of English knightly and gentle houses, arranged by county, that records arms, male-line descents, seats, and territorial claims for families established before the sixteenth century. It limits entries to extant county families in the male line, excluding claims through heiresses, illegitimate descent, or wholly dissipated estates, and usually treats families under their original counties when ancient seats survive. Drawn from county histories, manuscript collections, and correspondence, the notes present corrected and expanded pedigrees and heraldic details across successive editions.
