About This Book
A shipwrecked mariner recounts arrival on an isolated island where a rigid two-tier society prevails: dominant, quadrupedal first-class beings wield ruthless control, while a tall, well-treated second class labors under strict limitations and brutal penalties. The narrator conceals his anomaly and explores the landscape, encounters a frightened worker woman named Dream who has fled a sentence of death, and begins to plot escape by seeking the seaside village and its boats. Interwoven with this longer tale are other short imaginative stories that blend satire, fantasy, and speculative scenarios to examine social hierarchy, power, and human resilience.
