The narrative follows interconnected residents of a grim urban quarter as poverty, illness, and ambition shape their lives. An older traveler, a hungry girl named Jane Snowdon, and a circle of relatives and acquaintances navigate lodging-house struggles, family secrets, ill-fated romances, theatrical hopes, charity relief, and financial pressures. Episodes of aspiration, disclosure, debt, and moral compromise lead toward illness, death, and modest consolations, while social observation and psychological detail probe motives and class strain. The structure alternates close scenes with retrospective glimpses, building a portrait of desperation, small kindnesses, and the cost of striving under harsh circumstances.
