About This Book
The narrative follows an orphaned mountain boy who grows up tending sheep and forming bonds in a remote mountain community, learning at a rough local school and finding friendship and romance. He moves into the Bluegrass, encounters the manners and education of the lowlands, and faces a wrenching civil conflict that splits families and communities. He participates in raids and guerrilla fighting, endures capture and hospital care, and confronts loss, divided loyalties, and the long aftermath of defeat. The story closes with reconciliation, personal maturation, and a turn toward peace and westward opportunity.
