About This Book
A meticulous two-volume biography reconstructs the life, visions, military campaigns, trial, execution, and posthumous rehabilitation of Joan of Arc. It proceeds chronologically from childhood and the onset of auditory and visual revelations through visits to local commanders, journeys to Chinon, leadership at Orléans, the Loire victories, the coronation at Reims, capture at Compiègne, the Rouen trial and execution, and later retrial and legend formation. Interspersed are analyses of contemporary documents, comparisons with other visionaries, medical and psychiatric commentary, and appended letters and notes that illuminate procedure, politics, and popular belief behind her rise and martyrdom.
