The Inhabited

An otherworldly scout travels between dimensions to assess Earth as a refuge, slipping into the minds of animals and humans to observe their habits. Beginning in a mischievous cat and then moving into household members and neighbors, the traveler registers sensory details, domestic rituals, and the emotional tenor of everyday life while struggling with the limits imposed by host bodies and the need to transfer through open eyes. The story examines the clash between alien objectives and mundane human routines, the practical hazards of inhabiting unfamiliar consciousnesses, and the ironic consequences that arise when systematic reconnaissance collides with ordinary social behavior.
