About This Book
A group of Baxter High School students revolve around a heated rivalry between a hardworking scholar-athlete, Fred Markham, and the popular athlete Bart Montgomery. The narrative follows school contests, a struggling family situation that threatens Fred's place, tests of character including sacrifices, schemes and misunderstandings, and periodic setbacks such as suspensions and arrests. Baseball and class competitions form the backdrop for growth, loyalty, and eventual vindication when true merit and effort are recognized. Subplots involve other students whose actions complicate and ultimately clarify the outcome.
