About This Book
A down-on-his-luck sailor recently discharged from his ship meets a grieving woman who lost her son at sea and asks him to pose as the missing boy to comfort her and her daughter. He reluctantly plays the part, is embraced by the supposed sister, and together they confront the stepfather and a furniture dealer over goods being sold. The ruse leads to a warm, improvised family reunion, a recovery of the disputed furniture, and a comic exploration of assumed identity, compassion, and the ways small deceptions can mend loneliness and restore domestic belonging.
