The Girls of Hillcrest Farm; Or, The Secret of the Rocks

Two young sisters, obliged to abandon their city life after their mother's death and financial reversal, move into an old, long-shuttered house on a hill and set about making it livable. They face cramped quarters, local curiosity, and practical challenges while hiring help, receiving boarders, and getting to know neighboring families, including a shy young farmer. Village institutions and events—school meetings, a temperance circle, auctions, and even an automobile race—shape daily life and create complications. Gradually a string of mysterious clues and a buried secret tied to the old doctor's property demand ingenuity, testing the sisters' resolve and drawing the community closer.
