About This Book
A city gentleman receives a mysterious letter inviting him to a remote house and goes to investigate. There he meets a pale, dreamy young woman linked to the household and an inscrutable older attendant; the story follows his evenings and conversations amid antique rooms, dim light, and odd domestic rituals. Gradually a sense of unease builds as furtive gestures, symbolic details, and unexplained occurrences suggest hidden relationships and secrets. The narrative mixes social intrigue and tentative attraction with subtle suggestions of the uncanny while the truth about the household slowly comes to light.
