About This Book
Two young twins in Rheims confront the upheaval of war as their city is shelled, occupied, and later contested; they split time between helping a neighbor in her shop, visiting their wounded father in the cathedral precincts, and seeking safety in cellars while the cathedral’s stained glass and towers are threatened. The narrative follows village routines interrupted by bombardment, refugees, and military movements, and presents neighborhood figures such as Mother Meraut and Madame Coudert. Through children’s eyes it depicts resilience, communal aid, small domestic tasks, and budding patriotic feelings amid destruction and recovery.
