The Flag

The story centers on a fourteen-year-old boy raised by his aunt and stern grandfather in a village split into Hill and Valley factions, where schoolboys wage escalating skirmishes that culminate in a major snow battle. The school principal seeks to redirect their rivalry by organizing a subscription contest, assigning rival captains to gather the largest number of contributors to purchase an American flag for the school. As the contest unfolds, alliances, personal loyalties, and local pride are tested, and the protagonist must reconcile family obligations, youthful bravado, and a developing sense of community responsibility.
