About This Book
A mysterious death in London receives an uncertain verdict while a police inquiry probes the case, and a circle of expatriates in the countryside fear that the arrival of a young woman from Italy will expose a dark episode from their past. Two men, including a respected country physician, argue over prevention, concealment and possible flight as memories of a seaside incident resurface and the risk to their carefully maintained respectability grows. The narrative follows secrecy, shifting loyalties and the mounting tension between past transgressions and present social standing as investigation and private anxieties converge.
