About This Book
The story follows a young man who, after his father's death, leaves an old family home and drifts into mountain country, where a speeding escape by a woman pursued by law officers draws him into a mystery. His curiosity leads him into a mining town and into hazardous underground workings, where dwindling fortunes, abandoned equipment, and treacherous passages frame a suspenseful exploration of human loneliness, moral ambiguity, and the physical dangers of the mines.
