About This Book
A systematic study of the Christian liturgical year describes the weekly Lord’s Day and the annual cycle of fasts, feasts, and local commemorations, showing how martyrs’ days and celebrations of Christ and the Virgin were woven into calendars. It surveys varieties of observance—Sabbath and Sunday practice, ferias, stations, vigils, Advent, Lent, Rogation and Ember days—and the principal movable and immovable festivals. The work traces the history and compilation of Western and Eastern kalendars and martyrologies, explains paschal computation and controversies up to the Gregorian reform, and treats manuscript evidence and practical use. Appendices address Celtic and Eastern rites and post‑Reformation changes, with bibliographic guidance and illustrative plates.
