The Chaplain of the Fleet

The narrative follows Kitty, an orphaned young woman who goes to London and becomes entangled with a compassionate doctor and a lively circle of friends. Early episodes trace domestic ups and downs, romantic promises to two suitors, comic misapprehensions and legal troubles arising from a financial speculation that leaves two women imprisoned, which the doctor and others work to remedy. The later section chronicles the group's return to fashionable society at the Wells, where balls, letters, masquerades, a near-duel, shifting engagements, and reconciliations resolve several characters' fortunes and secure a nobleman's release. Through episodic scenes of social comedy and rescue, the book examines loyalty, social ritual, and the interplay of private feeling and public reputation.
