An elderly centurion recounts overseeing the arrest, trial, and crucifixion of a prophetic itinerant teacher, recalling the crowded Passover atmosphere, his appearance after scourging, the procession along the Via Dolorosa, and acts of compassion and cruelty witnessed en route. He describes the nailing to the cross between two criminals, the victim's refusal of stupefaction, his prayer for forgiveness, the soldiers casting lots for garments, the mockery from onlookers and religious leaders, and a penitent thief. The narrator reflects on suffering, mercy, legend, and the later fulfillment of the condemned man's warnings for the city's fate.
