A shipwrecked, bookish young man, Waldo, survives among a primitive coastal people after being found and repeatedly aided by a fierce, resourceful young woman, Nadara. Their uneasy companionship grows into mutual attraction as he struggles with fear and she contends with tribal expectations. The plot moves through isolated wilderness scenes, clashes with hostile cave-dwellers and rival groups, captures and escapes, and seaborne ventures that test endurance and loyalty. Adventure episodes include improvised boatbuilding, pitched battles, and a determined search-and-rescue. Underlying themes examine survival versus cultivated refinement, the tension between intellect and physical prowess, and personal transformation through hardship.
