The Boy with the U. S. Weather Men

A young boy becomes involved with a team that studies and predicts the weather and learns meteorology through a series of vivid adventures and demonstrations. He helps with flood rescues, observes kite-borne and high-atmosphere exploration, studies sun-and-instrument methods, and takes part in efforts to prevent frost in orchards. Interwoven are dramatic encounters with tornadoes, hurricanes, lightning, and other violent phenomena, plus an episode in which weather knowledge helps vindicate an innocent man. Chapters alternate practical explanations of instruments and cloud types with gripping field episodes that show both the scientific work of forecasting and the destructive power of the atmosphere.
