About This Book
The narrative follows two young volunteers who, while traveling in wartime Europe, encounter submarine warfare and its dangers firsthand. They survive torpedo attacks, witness surface and submerged engagements, are captured and confined aboard an undersea boat, learn its machinery and operating methods, struggle with steel nets and mines, and engage in efforts to operate or disable the vessel. Technical, illustrated descriptions of periscopes, conning towers, and underwater devices punctuate the action, which culminates in a daring rescue and episodes of explosions and escapes in the Channel.
