About This Book
The narrative follows residents of a modest bathing-house neighborhood through interlocking episodes of domestic drama and urban social life. A compassionate young woman shelters a seduced and exiled girl and seeks redress from the noble who abandoned her; a chevalier moves from indifference to intervention; a drunken father complicates family stability; and other figures pursue vanity, charity, or self-interest. Vignettes shift between melodrama and comic detail to examine honor, hypocrisy, social class, and personal responsibility in everyday city scenes.
