About This Book
A young man faces family ruin after his father's death, as his sisters seek work and their longtime black nurse comforts them with memories of her kidnapping and faith. He signs on with a trader bound for the African coast, and the voyage becomes a trial: calms and poor navigation, an ailing captain, moral reflections on religion and duty, and finally a fire in the hold that leads the crew to abandon ship. The narrator and a companion escape in a small boat and watch a schooner approach, blending coming-of-age adventure with themes of loyalty, faith, and maritime peril.
