About This Book
A scholarship boy is sent to a county school and must navigate social exclusion, modest family circumstances, and rivalries with classmates. He applies himself to lessons and laboratory work while keeping much of his school life private, and his placement is shaped by outside influence. The story follows family worries about expenses and clothing, episodes of teasing and an ostracism called being sent to Coventry, and a dangerous laboratory incident in which his actions avert worse harm. Scenes of everyday school routine and interpersonal tests illustrate themes of industry, humility, responsibility, and the burdens that accompany talent.
