An extended residence in a northwestern Arctic village produced a collection of short sketches that preserve local oral traditions, myths of origin, and explanatory tales about natural phenomena alongside practical accounts of daily life, material culture, and seasonal travel. The author intersperses retellings of legends with descriptive notes on burial customs, toolmaking, fire and music traditions, and encounters during hunting and sled journeys, and adds observations of social practices such as courtship and story-telling evenings. Archaeological finds and explanations of implements appear alongside vivid travel episodes, creating a mix of ethnographic detail and folklore presented in plain, unembellished English.
