About This Book
A fugitive sailor, chased by a stout police sergeant, slips into a neighbor's yard and is taken in by a resourceful young woman who conceals him in a cupboard when the pursuer calls. She weighs loyalty to her father against sympathy for the intruder, arranges cover for his presence, and endures a night of anxious indecision and imagined dangers. By morning she discovers the source of the commotion is her own father cleaning off mud, producing an awkward, comic revelation that reframes the earlier pursuit and leaves the hidden sailor and household members in embarrassed, ironic proximity.
