About This Book
A brooding night-watchman reflects on kindness and ingratitude. The narrative follows Sam Small, who, after drinking, meets Detective-Sergeant Cubbins; the detective persuades him to act as bait for two thieves to secure their capture, placing a diamond ring on Sam's finger as assurance and instructing him to appear intoxicated at a set place and time. Sam agrees, hides the ring, and later his shipmates discover it, creating the setup for the promised entrapment and impending comic complications.
