About This Book
The volume compiles and interprets archaeological activity in Britain during 1914, reviewing excavations, artefacts and inscriptions from numerous sites and summarising related publications. It catalogues new discoveries — fort plans, domestic and military buildings, kilns and pottery including stamped and glazed wares, inscribed stones and altars — and presents plans, illustrations and brief site reports that assess manufacture, chronology and function. Separate sections list inscriptions found that year and survey contemporary scholarship and periodical literature. Throughout, attention is given to technical details of finds (for example pottery stamps and kiln fittings) and to how scattered discoveries contribute to understanding urban, military and rural Roman-era occupation.
