Ran away from the Dutch

A party of deserters flees authority and undertakes a perilous journey across Borneo, moving by river, raft, and foot through coastal settlements, dense jungle, and remote upriver posts. The narrative alternates travel episodes, skirmishes, and rescues with vivid descriptions of local customs, funerary rites, bee- and crocodile-hunting, and encounters with head-hunting groups and smugglers. Recurrent scenes show illness, pursuit by armed detachments, and improvised alliances, while the episodic structure contrasts survival exigencies with moments of cultural exchange and the tensions between outside forces and interior communities.
