About This Book
The narrator and an ambitious companion are marooned on an apparently uninhabited planet after a hyperspace mishap; survival needs prompt exploration, discovery of water, game, and ruined cities, and tension as the companion asserts autocratic governance and proposes monetary and civic structures using recovered treasure. Their plans to settle and exploit the ruins are upended when they encounter a living woman armed and wary, revealing the planet is not truly empty and introducing new danger and political complications. The story examines luck, improvisation, and how political instincts shape responses to isolation and scarce resources.
