Pioneers

A group of colonists awakens from hibernation on a remote planet and must repay recruiters' debts by pioneering new settlements. Dorav Brink navigates assignment lists, pairing with the capable Tzal while Bryt Carby is matched with the mercurial Rea; a recruiter named Len Daniels enforces rules and profits from smuggling. The narrative follows their early efforts to erect shelters, procure food, and adapt to unfamiliar terrain while confronting economic pressures, interpersonal tensions, and moral compromises. Themes include survival, resourcefulness, the costs of escape from a mechanized home, and the ambiguous role of deception in frontier life.
